What Is Affiliate Marketing On YouTube?

One of my videos made me $500 in one sale, another earned me $1000 in one sale, in fact, many of these videos have the potential to earn money, and it isn’t from YouTube advertising revenue.

The strategy used here is called affiliate marketing, which is basically a referral system where you get rewarded if you introduce a buyer to a seller.

Let me explain, ok, so remember when you were a kid and maybe you got a new pair of trainers or sneakers, that first time you pulled the shoelaces tight and took them for a test drive. You would throw that door open and get outside. Starting with a bit of a walk, a little run, maybe a jump in the air, or a kick of the ball.

That awesome feeling when you can swap those stinky hole-ridden old things for your fresh new shoes.

Now imagine that you turn to your friends and you tell them how these trainers have made you:

• Faster at running
• You can jump higher at basketball
• Kick the ball harder at football
• And did you mention how the girls heads turn when you are walking down the street?

They are going to want a pair of their own, they are going to be asking you “Jon, where did you get those trainers!” and so you give them the link to the website they can buy them on, your special affiliate link.

They click that link, buy those shoes, and there you have it – you just made a commission.

Now imagine that instead of telling your friends, you were telling the 2 billion active users that visit YouTube each month!

That’s affiliate marketing.

It’s a 12 billion industry and one of the leading ways that content creators earn money online.

Now buckle up, I am about to give you 5 important lessons you need to learn before you can earn money on YouTube through affiliate marketing.

Why Affiliate Marketing is F#cking Awesome

The first thing to cover is why we want to use affiliate marketing, is it really worth the effort to learn?

Short answer – your damn right it is, and here’s why.

We’ve already covered that getting monetized for ads requires you to qualify and pretty high milestones, and for some of you, it may be that you have created all of these videos and when the time comes may even get rejected and so you can’t even run ads.

Affiliate marketing though is all done external to YouTube, they don’t control it.

What normally happens is that you find products that fit with your content, you then apply to be an affiliate. Some of the product owners and vendors will make this really easy and some will require you to apply and check that you’re a good fit. I will explain in a moment where to find good affiliate programs, but you need to understand how simple this process is.

Put yourself in the shoes of the product owner, they have so much to worry about:

• Design
• Manufacturing
• Marketing
• Sales
• Shipping
• Customer service
• Returns and so on

Sounds like an absolute ballache right!

Whereas you as the affiliate, just have to convince people to click on that link. That’s it. It’s a ridiculously simple way of making money on YouTube or any content platform.

How To Promote Affiliate Products The Right Way

So you know what affiliate marketing is, but how do you do it the right way? Let me explain how to increase the number of sales you make and also not tarnish your reputation by coming across as a shady product pusher.

Firstly, don’t be a douche, just promote good products that people will like and will help solve their problems.

If you promote low-quality crap that you don’t believe in then people will pick up on that. Remember you are building a platform, a long-term business, where people watch your videos, trust you and are happy to invest in your recommendations. That won’t last long if you throw any old rubbish in their direction.

Secondly, if you want to increase those sales and earn more in commissions, then consider the products you promote.

Don’t push the features, instead focus on the benefits.

For example, this software costs a minimum $97 a month, anyone that signs up under my affiliate link will earn me almost $40 every month they use the software.

Now I don’t create content saying “There are 100 font styles, or that you can create 20 different sales funnels”, instead, I would focus on the fact that a sales funnel “streamlines the buying process for their customers, it is proven to increase their conversion rate, and using this software you can increase the minimum order value and ultimately your profits”.

Focus on the benefits and the transformation that the product brings. To do this you need to consider people’s pain points, the things that stop them from sleeping at night, and what they truly need.

Where To Find Good Affiliate Products

By now we are probably on the same page, and in agreement that affiliate marketing is awesome. But you want to know where to find affiliate products right? Don’t worry, I’ve got you, this part is easy.

First up, what products or services are popular in your niche, and may be relevant to your audience?

What are others in your genre promoting?

Go to google and type in that product name plus affiliate. Research the links that come up. Some retailers will use an affiliate network, such as commissionjunction, shareasale, awin, impact. These are basically networks with lots of retailers, and you create an account and apply for each one.

One of the most popular affiliate programs is Amazon.

Look for the link at the bottom of the homepage and apply there, its a really easy process and as you know amazon has almost any product for sale. eBay is exactly the same.

Now if you want more lucrative and higher-paying products then I suggest you look at Clickbank which is another marketplace but for digital products.

There are things on ClickBank you can promote for woodworking, learning languages, losing weight and pretty much any subject you can imagine. You do need to do some homework though and verify if they are any good.

My favourite category to look in is software, they usually offer rewarding affiliate schemes that pay generously, and often they pay each month that someone is a member. If you go to capterra.com and have a browse around you might find software that is relevant to your niche.

Once you have been accepted to an affiliate program the vendor will give you a unique link to use, this is yours alone, and anyone who clicks on it will be tracked and associated with yourself.

This is how they know who to pay.

How Do I Promote An Affiliate Product On YouTube?

So you have your product now you need to promote it. Like I mentioned earlier, do this in the most genuine and legit way possible as you are building a reputation not just chasing money.

Now listen up, 68% of Youtube users used YouTube to help make a purchasing decision. And many people use YouTube to learn and to solve problems, so create content that does exactly that.

Let’s say you are in the fitness niche and promoting this big fat bucket of whey protein – a personal favourite of mine…..

You could create videos that are based on buyer intent, in other words, they are what people would search for when they are close to buying like a Serious Gainz review video, or a top 5 whey proteins for meat heads video, or you can create more generic videos where the product just plays a small part.

In the video and the description, you want to add CTAs (Call To Actions).

This is where you tell your viewer to follow the link. And for those that do, and make a purchase, you earn your commission.

How Much Can You Earn With Affiliate Marketing On YouTube?

The beauty of YouTube is that when you start building momentum and growing your channel, your videos are shown all over the world and at any time of the day.

It becomes a passive income machine where you can truly earn commissions whilst you sleep – that old cliche.

The bigger you get the better the chances of making affiliate sales.

I made way more from affiliate sales than I did advertising revenue last year, it all depends on what products you are promoting and what commissions they earn.

One thing I notice a lot in the affiliate community though is what I call the failed affiliate lifecycle – this is where people quit and turn their back on the opportunity, and run away to pursue another strategy like MLM.

Problem Number 1 Is Expectations

This is a big industry, and there are people having crazy success, they make money as affiliates and then go onto release their own digital products, and live a life that undoubtedly they wouldn’t have managed working their 9-5.

A lot of people see this, but they don’t see the years of hard work and pain. They just see the shiny part, unfortunately, this gives unrealistic expectations.

Two months into their venture, and after posting about 12 Facebook posts, or writing 4 blog posts they will be the ones stood there telling anyone willing to listen that “affiliate marketing is a scam, I’ve been at this a solid 2 months now and I’m yet to quit my job!”.

This is reason number 1 as to why you need a good coaching program, and you need one that is realistic, that will focus on the mindset that you require and the attitude you need to develop.

I mean, seriously, you show me one success story that isn’t working their backside off creating content.

This is exactly how I used to feel.

I became a ninja of building playlists and saving little screenshots of what I thought I needed to know. Yet it took me absolutely ages to make any real progress.

All my time was spent bouncing around groups, getting distracted by each post and not doing the most important part – creating content, not consuming.

It took me a long time to start valuing my time over money, and let’s face it, time is the greatest leveller. We all get the same number of hours in the day even if you’re a millionaire you don’t get any bonus time.

So if you take one thing from this video its to start valuing your own time. Learn to use it wisely as you only have so much of it.

One way an affiliate coaching program helps with this is that you don’t need to bounce around every channel, blog or group.

Problem Number 4 Is Around Strategy

I mentioned at the start of this post what a simple concept affiliate marketing is. But many people mistake simplicity for easy and that’s where the issue lies.

Look, I wouldn’t be far wrong if I told you at a 30,000-foot overview, all you need to do is:

• Choose a niche
• Choose a platform
• Create content that helps people
• Suggest the products that will help solve their pain points and problems

But it’s not that simple, is it?

Now some of the affiliate marking courses will fill the modules with hacks and short terms techniques that quickly outdate. This leaves the program stale and worn to death by the time you jump in. Eventually, they will try and sell you version 2 of the course.

You don’t want to be buying these programs.

Instead, you want one that teaches you the core skills around sales and marketing.

The concepts that stand the test of time, and when a new social media platform comes along, you can dive straight on it and apply these same strategies.

It may not be as sexy as what some of the more specialist training is teaching but it’s about giving yourself the long term skills to succeed.

Problem Number 5 Also Relates To Money

I’ve just told you the benefits you get from the best affiliate marketing courses and coaching programs. The support, the mindset, the focus, the skills. Yet because its something we can start for free, a lot of us choose not to invest the money.

It’s scary paying some internet dude a load of money for something virtual, a product we can’t pick up or touch.

I had cold sweats and was shaking when I signed up with my coach.

My wife forced me to in the end and threw my credit card at me.

It wasn’t a trust thing though. I had been following and talking to this guy for months before. I knew he was the real deal, not full of bull and would tell me what I needed to hear and not what I wanted to hear. And that’s great, but typing your card details in to a website is another matter!

I hope that explains some of the biggest reasons why investing in a good coaching program can be the best decision you make, I know it was for me.

So If you’re looking for ways to make some additional money then you may have already heard of affiliate marketing. A business model that is huge for any online content creators such as bloggers and YouTubers, but also works great on just about any free social media platform. 

It’s a referral strategy where you promote other people’s products and services, and if someone buys through your special affiliate link then you get a commission. 

Money in your pocket and you didn’t have to do any:

• Product design
• Manufacturing
• Shipping
• Customer service
• Handle any returns or awkward customers. 

All you did was recommend something and the product owner can worry about all that other crap! It’s really simple!

There are huge websites supplementing their income with the affiliate marketing model and also everyday folk like you and me.  It’s a 12 billion dollar industry.

Here is how it works. 

First you need to create your building blocks for your online business, this usually consists of choosing a niche and a platform, and i will go into these in a moment. 

Then we look for a product or service that has an affiliate program we can promote, and there are no shortage of opportunities here as 81% of brands have an affiliate program, we then apply to be an affiliate, and they will give us some special weblinks, if we send that link to someone and they click on it and then buy the product, we earn a commission. 

One step closer to that new pair of extra fluffy slippers.

It’s really simple, and here’s an example. 

So amazon is the beast of e-commerce, they sell almost anything.

You apply to join their affiliate program, and if they accept you then they will give you an extra feature when you login, this little toolbar lets you go to any amazon page and then generate your unique link. 

So let’s say you run a Facebook group which is all about healthy eating and nutrition, you’ve just read an awesome book about avocado recipes, you find that product on amazon, copy the link for that product and then paste it into your group – telling the community why they should buy it. 

If someone clicks on it and buys then you get a commission,  you just made money from avocados – life is good.

And it’s the same process for any other platform. The good thing about Amazon is that they are a selling machine if you send people to them, there’s a good chance they will buy.

How To Choose A Niche For Affiliate Marketing?

A niche is simply the subject that you wish to talk or write about – most people will say follow your passions with your niche because your going to create a lot of content and don’t want to get bored, and I get that, but remember, as you learn something new you can also develop a passion too.

So if your only interest is knitting and sewing, don’t assume that’s what you have to create content about.

If you need some suggestions then often the most profitable niches are often in:

• Health
• Wealth
• Relationships, but think about how you can narrow those down a little. 

Find a little subcategory that’s less competitive, that could be “Making money as a freelance writer” or “Fitness advice for busy entrepreneurs”.

Remember you can always narrow down as you go so don’t let this decision stop you in your tracks.

What Are The Best Platforms For Affiliate Marketing?

If you enjoy connecting with people start a group.

If you like to live in your head and write, then start a blog.

If you like to talk then create a youtube channel.

The good news is that other than blogs, most platforms are free. Yes, you may want to add certain software in order to improve conversions and build a long term business, but just to get started you often just need a smartphone.

My top advice here, in this affiliate marketing for dummies guide, is whatever platform you choose, focus just on that for now, don’t go opening social media accounts everywhere and spread your efforts too thin. If you want to be a blogger then just do that. When you have 50 blog posts published then add a platform that compliments it such as Pinterest.

My personal favourites are blogs and youtube, which are the best platforms for long term organic growth, people will find my content on these in time to come, as they show in google search results. 

If you want something more short term, that you can build faster and get sales faster, then a Facebook group is an excellent option, but remember that a group is not going to appear in any google search results.

There are other options too though, you can:

• Write on medium
• Answer questions on quora
• Take photos on Instagram
• Short snappy videos on TikTok
• Or even use LinkedIn if you are promoting the right products.

Wherever there is an audience there will be a way to make money using affiliate marketing, so think about what you like to do? 

Do You Have Any Examples Of Affiliate Marketing?

Doesn’t matter if you are a Big fish or teeny tiny fish in the pond, you can earn money with affiliate marketing. 

Some of the biggest examples are websites like nerdwallet who offer advice with financial products, or moneysavingexpert who are huge consumer rights and advice site in the UK, or PC partpicker who profit every time you click on a computer component and buy it.

These sites make millions. 

But don’t worry, even if you are just starting up there is still opportunity for you, and I know plenty of bloggers and YouTubers who make money through affiliate marketing, some earn a nice side income and some make enough to quit their day job. 

Look at my friend Ilir who geeks out about digital marketing on his blog and gets to do this for a living or another buddy of mine Steve who creates awesome content on YouTube.

In the highlighted video he talks about some software for YouTubers, if you watch that video and think wow that’s exactly what I need and you click his link and buy that product, my mate Steve will get a commission, and so he should as he’s an awesome guy!

How Do I Find Products To Promote With Affiliate Marketing?

Not many people realise the scale of the affiliate industry.

Huge brands like Walmart, amazon, ebay, adidas all the way down to solo entrepreneurs that are releasing their very first digital products. (Yes, you too could set up your own affiliate program really easily if you wanted).

The reason why this has become a go-to strategy is because it’s an excellent way to use influencers and content creators to promote their products without the brand having to do any marketing effort at all. 

There are affiliate networks and marketplaces you can join that manage affiliate programs for people – such as awin, shareasale, clickbank and maxbounty.

But here is the really simple way I find products to promote. 

It’s as easy as looking at the tools, products, software and training that my ideal audience would need. If you are immersed in the communities of your niche then you will know these already. 

I then sign up and use them myself so I can really understand the pros and cons and can identify what problems they solve.

Once I’ve identified something I just search on google for an affiliate program and then apply, some are easy to get accepted and others may have qualifying criteria.

As an example, the highest paying program I’m part of ($1500 commissions) is actually an affiliate coaching program from my own mentor, he won’t let anyone promote it unless they are a student themselves as he only wants genuine testimonials and people who have experienced the program.

Whereas Amazon is much easier to apply and once you are in they give you 6 months to make a few qualifying sales. 

What Are The Benefits Of Affiliate Marketing?

If I listed every single benefit then this affiliate marketing for dummies guide would likely never end, so let’s focus on the key ones.

Benefit #1 Passive Income

Have you ever heard the phrase passive income, or those bold claims that you can make money whilst you sleep? 

I know, sounds like utter horse crap doesn’t it, but actually, it’s true. 

You see with a lot of platforms, we create content once and hit publish, and then it’s done. 

We just leave it out there to do its thing.

Look at my youtube stats, you see these videos, these are the ones that were watched yesterday, yet I created them months ago. So they make passive income as each person who watches could potentially click on a link and earn a commission. 

Some platforms are better than others for passive income, for example a blog is a thousand times better than Instagram which generally doesn’t continue to promote your old posts. Its throwaway content that will rarely be seen again.

Benefit #2 Huge Earnings Potential

Another and more obvious benefit of affiliate marketing is the potential to earn life-changing money. 

Now I told you before about amazon, and whilst they are one of the most popular programs to start with, they pay pretty low commissions, whereas there are other products that can earn you $500, $1000 or even $1500 for just one sale. 

Getting 20 people to sign up to some software that pays $500 commissions, means an extra 10 thousand dollars to you, it would take thousands of sales at low price commissions to reach that number.

Benefit #3 Anyone Can Do This

Lastly, this is a strategy that anyone can use, and you can start for free if you have no budget.

You don’t have to design, manufacture, ship, or do any of the hard stuff that products creators do. You just create content to promote it.

So there are really no excuses, if you’re reading this and wanting a way to make money from home, working around your busy life, then stop giving yourself excuses and just do it. Everything you need is out there.

What Are The Downsides Of Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing does get a bad rep at times, and I will tell you why and how you can keep your own reputation intact.

Whilst I always recommend promoting quality products that you love and stand by, there is also a lot of absolute crap out there. And some people will promote anything that makes them money, regardless of the quality.

Look, I honestly believe there are people that would sell their grandma if it paid them 200 dollars.

So the easy answer to this is don’t be that person. 

Promote products you would happily buy yourself and recommend to your family and friends. People will see this and learn to like and trust you, and as you build your audience and influence there’s much more chance of people clicking that buy button over and over again.

How Much Money Can You Make With Affiliate Marketing?

What I am about to tell you is the same for any business model, whether that’s dropshipping, merch design, MLM and it’s that some people will make serious money and some people will make nothing, and here’s why.

It’s not the strategy that’s flawed, or broken, it’s just that some people will always quit when they can’t see instant rewards. 

We are conditioned through education and our careers, to get up each morning and exchange our time for money.

From 9 till 5 each day we work for someone else, building their dreams, and in exchange we get an agreed salary.

This is active income.

Affiliate marketing doesn’t work this way.

You could create 50 videos and get no immediate reward, so you also have to enjoy what you’re doing, and relish the challenge of learning new skills. 

Whilst you do this your videos and blog posts may start getting some traction and people visiting them, clicking your links and earning you 1 commission, then 2, then 5 and so on. Passive income over a longer-term.

Too many people quit when they are inches away from success.

Big authority blog sites like the wirecutter who create product reviews, can make serious money, I mean millions. In fact, they were so successful that New York times paid 30 million dollars to buy the website in 2016.

But that’s a big example, for anyone else getting started you have to look at a few factors:

1. Are your audience willing and able buyers? are they passionate about the subject you create content about?
2. Are there good products and services in that niche or market that solve peoples pain points and also have affiliate programs?
3. How much commission do those products make? Let’s face it, promoting software that pays $500 will help you achieve your dreams faster than an amazon product that pays 40 cents for a commission
4. How committed are you, are you in for the long haul and willing to do what others won’t to get what others don’t?

Is Affiliate Marketing Easy?

I’m a big believer in just being open and honest. I know at times that isn’t clever marketing, I should sell you the dream, but if I’ve any chance of you coming back to read any more of my posts then you need to hear the truth.

So is affiliate marketing easy? 

Well yes, the concept is very simple. You recommend products and earn a commission. It couldn’t be more simple.

The technical side is fairly easy too, you can set up youtube or social media accounts for free (you probably have several already).

A blog needs a little more work but nothing you can’t manage I promise. The advanced stuff like sales funnels and email marketing is where it gets trickier but you don’t need to worry about that if you’re just a beginner.

Where it gets difficult is more around you. 

It’s the mental aspects and the mindset needed to constantly improve your skills and create content consistently. 

Look no offence, but most people are lazy, they watch videos like this over and over again but they never pull the trigger and get started. I know this because I was the same.

If that’s you, then here’s how you overcome that. 

First I want you to identify your reason why, ask yourself why you want to make money from affiliate marketing, draw a picture, or write it down, go back to this every single day. 

For me it’s easy, I want to show my family the world and my salary alone won’t do that.

Secondly, just start. 

Unsubscribe from all of the other influencers and turn off any distractions on your phone, now pick a platform, think about who you can help with your content, and begin.

Seriously though, my youtube channel started because I told everyone I would create 100 videos in 100 days.

I don’t recommend that volume, but do something similar, maybe 2 videos a week, but challenge yourself and feel the pressure to achieve this and once you have that momentum there’s no stopping you.

Let’s jump straight into number 1 which is Video Editing, in other words taking raw video footage or an idea and transforming it into published content.

The question is, who would pay for this service?

Well video marketing is absolutely huge – it’s becoming the primary way we consume information – with video sites like YouTube taking over from traditional TV and all social media platforms embracing the power of video too

You are going to help businesses, entrepreneurs, YouTubers and anyone with a need to publish videos for their content marketing strategy.

First up, I want to say if you’ve never edited a video before, then don’t underestimate your own abilities to learn and develop new skills. Anyone can learn video editing or any other talent if you are willing to put the work in, practice and create.

Many YouTubers, including myself, are self-taught using tutorials on YouTube or even paying for courses and training; you can get cheap ones on Skillshare or Udemy, or you can pay premium for some really high-level stuff. There is so much high-quality content out there to learn video editing software inside out.

So how much can you make editing videos?

Well, that varies really and all depends at what stage you are at on your journey. If you are building a portfolio and just getting started then you will need to price lower, and maybe look at using freelance sites like Upwork, Freelancer, Fiverr.

Long term you should be looking to build relationships with clients and work directly with them to cut out the expense of the middle man.

A quick look on Upwork and some editors are charging $100 an hour never mind a day, but let’s be realistic, many of these are top of their game, they’ve been in your shoes and they’ve levelled up many times.

But there are plenty of people that are making $20-30 an hour which would easily make you $100 a day as you build up your experience.

There are many different types of software you can master, from the more premium adobe offerings down to affordable but great quality editors like fimora which you can pick up a lifetime licence for less than $100.

You can even specialise and focus just on animations or whiteboard explainer videos like this one if required, I’ve really enjoyed learning how to create these over the last year.

If I can do it, then so can you.

Look at the locations of the people on Upwork as well, these people are based all over the world and in many cases are able to make above the national average wage by freelancing their services.

The skills you earn will allow you to create a career as a video editor but also equip you with many of the talents required to build your own YouTube channel if you ever wish.

Make $100 A Day As A Virtual Assistant

Second in our list of ways to make $100 a day working from home in 2021, is becoming a Virtual Assistant (VA).

So what does that entail? What exactly does a vitual assistant do?

The simple answer is that they provide support services to businesses and entrepreneurs, but the reality is this could be a wide range of tasks that keep the business running smoothly.

From admin, to scheduling events, digital marketing, to project management, to pretty much anything that a business may need help with and need to outsource.

I have marketing friends that pay a VA to complete their youtube descriptions, publish their blog posts, source information for their social media posts – whatever they need to free themselves up from doing they outsource to a VA.

The fact we have so much amazing technology with cloud-based software for task management, file storage, teleconferencing means this is a role that can be fulfilled from anywhere in the world.

One thing they all loved about being a VA is that they can choose their own hours, working around family commitments and being the boss of their own schedule.

If you want to build a client base, then focus on networking – getting your name out there and connecting with people.

Think about who you are best working with and what skills you have or are willing to learn, consider who else works as a freelancer that doesn’t have the time to do everything they need?

It could be realtors, digital marketers, startup businesses.

Use sites like LinkedIn to detail your experience and services. Don’t be afraid to ask, so many people have their own businesses or side hustles and are crying out for some help and organisation as they realise they cant do everything themselves.

Now this next one is gold and has huge potential in many ways, let me explain…

Third on the list, involves local business digital marketing…..sounds fancy eh…. well this is actually less complicated than you think, and can earn you money in several ways, and again you can do at any time of the day, and without having to leave your home.

But first, did you know there are almost 400 million small/medium businesses in the world, and the average age of a small business owner is around 49 years old.

Now, that’s a little older than me, and at times I feel like I have zero clue around some platforms and technologies, so many business owners will be the same.

So you are going to step in and put some of your social media and tech skills to good use. All that time on Facebook may now pay off.

Think about what marketing needs a small business may have, ultimately they want to get leads and customers, and grow their online presence. Heres are a few digital marketing services you can offer to get you started:

• Social media management – do they have a Facebook page, YouTube channel, or even a LinkedIn presence?
• Design – using a free app like canva you can fulfil all of their design needs whether that’s posters, flyers, logos, or again social media posts
• Email marketing – which is a great way to nurture a relationship with customers and build trust. Why not offer them a service where you handle this for them, a weekly email for a set price.

Websites – Believe it or not, there are so many businesses, especially those who are self-employed and sole traders that don’t have websites, or google listings or any kind of presence on the internet. They are still relying on local phone directories, newspaper adverts, and word of mouth.

Go out there and help them. Drag them kicking and screaming into the modern-day.

Can I Really Make Money With Google Maps?

I am about to show you 3 legit strategies that demonstrate how to make money with google maps and build a solid work from home business. All you need is a laptop and the ability to help people.

This is a strategy that many people have adopted, and I am going to break it down into steps.

You will learn 3 different strategies to earn money, including a way of opening the door to potential customers.

Before we start, it’s important to point out that this isn’t a scam, or a get rich quick scheme. I will only ever give you legit opportunities that take effort and sometimes a little push of your comfort zone.

The Proven Strategy

So it’s 2020, the craziest year I’ve ever known, Local businesses are suffering at the moment, especially in hospitality and retail, but other services too:

• Salons
• Dentists
• Personal trainers
• Taxis
• Small shop owners
• Cafes and restaurants
• And many more….

Now more than ever, they need an edge, a way to distinguish them from their competitors and that’s what we are going to help them with.

We are going to drag these business owners into the modern-day and help get more people through their doors. more customers, more profits, more money to pay you!

The premise of this strategy is that we use google maps to search for local businesses, identify the ones that haven’t configured themselves to take advantage of the worlds most powerful search engine, and that should open the door to potentially helping them with their digital needs.

That’s it in a nutshell and I’m going to add an extra ingredient that will explain how to make money with Google maps.

Identify A Business Owner & Location

This is the research phase – so start up your laptop, and open Google maps.

We are going to look for businesses that need our help – the service industry is great for this but really it could be anyone – dentists, chiropractors, electrician, plumbers, hair salons etc

If you have any industry experience or family members in a particular job/business, then that can work great, as you understand their business needs and how they operate. It also gives you a chance to test the process.

I would also think about the business type you are targeting, are they willing and able to spend money? Ideally, you want one that makes enough money but would benefit from more customers.

In terms of location, for now, I would stick to cities close to you, because if this blows up you may benefit from face to face meetings too, but also you know the local area and people.

Start researching the businesses you find and keep a note or google spreadsheet to record the details such as company name, email address etc.

Find The Problem

Before we move onto the 3 monetization strategies, we first need to get our foot in the door, and find a way of helping our local businesses.

Now, there’s a couple of things to look for here:

Google My Business (GMB)

Google is the most popular search engine in the world with over 70% of internet traffic.

One of the features they use to help promote local business is Google My Business, something that every local business should claim, it’s your way of controlling your details on google maps, and increasing your custom.

Why would you want to do that?

Because its Google – people use their phones constantly to find businesses they need. You won’t show up in the top results unless you are using GMB – yet so many people are leaving their business unclaimed.

So we are going to search for our business type and location, and literally click on them. Try different businesses, try nearby towns and cities. Move around the map and start compiling your list.

You are looking for any that say “claim your business”, some will have websites too and some won’t.

It’s fairly safe to say that any you find could do with some help with local marketing – now there you go, in the space of 2 mins, you’ve already learnt one of the most effective ways of marketing a local business.

Website Quality

The second thing to look for is the website itself – so many of these will have awful sounding domains and ageing websites.

It won’t take you long to find some examples that literally haven’t updated their websites in years and years, and are probably just a one-pager that their uncle Jeff made (as he was good with computers and all that jazz.)

Find the ones that look dated, visually unappealing, and mark them down on your list too.

Mobile-Friendly – Responsive

Open each website and change the size of the window, is it responsive? Does the layout change to suit a phone or does it stay in “desktop” mode?

In other words, if they don’t change size when you’re on a cell/mobile phone they probably need a refresh – and come from a time no one used phones!

We now have a list of local businesses that need our help. We are going to help these businesses with their marketing.

Now, don’t you tell me that you know nothing about marketing and you can’t do it!

You can do it, and I will show you, but something to remember, the average age of a small business owner is 49. They are not from the generation of gadgets, software and digital marketing, they may need help with these things.

This is where you come in, and is exactly how to make money with Google maps.

I am going to show you how to create simple but powerful websites, that don’t even cost any money.

Pitch Your Services

We are going to get in touch with the business and introduce ourselves. Make it clear what we are offering and how we can help them.

I know this sounds scary, and I don’t like picking up the phone and speaking to people either, so I’m gonna show you a great way to do this and get your message across.

So if you don’t want to call them, then try email and you could word it something like this….

Hey, my name is Jon, I am a digital marketer looking to help local business owners with their online marketing.

I noticed your website on google maps and wanted to give you a few pointers that could really help you find new clients. No catch, just some free advice that will boost your online presence.

Firstly, I noticed that you hadn’t claimed your business on Google yet, the worlds biggest search engine, most people use google maps on mobile devices in order to locate businesses so it’s really important you are on there!

The only way to start showing in the top results is to register google my business – its really easy, you fill in some basic details. But it really does help boost your presence on the biggest search platform in the world.

Secondly, I noticed that your website isn’t mobile friendly…..

Lastly, Like all good homes, I think your website could do with a lick of paint, a freshen up in order to make visitors feel a bit more welcome but at the same time it should really encourage them to take action.

Now I normally charge $1000 for a basic website plus any tooling you may need on top of that, but i am looking to build my portfolio in your particular industry and would love to work with you at a fraction of that cost and help you with some of the improvements we identified above.

Now if you don’t want to write a letter then this is an amazing alternative that builds trust and puts a face to the email, increasing their chance of saying yes.

When you’ve finished recording, loom creates a unique URL/Web link, so you just need to add that to the email.

Level Up Your Skills & Income

This is the first strategy that shows you how to make money with Google maps, and like anything, it’s going to be a numbers game, some will say no and some will say yes.

Keep reading, as very shortly I’m going to show you how to profit even from the businesses that decline your services.

But it’s serving those that say yes that will build momentum and your confidence. You will progress fast and learn a tonne as you go along if you approach this with the right mindset.

When you do get a yes then firstly help them with the google my business, it’s really easy to do.

If you want to outsource this part then you could also look on fiverr and find someone that can help optimise their local business, add them into any local directories, and build up some trust to their site.

The main money is in the website build, and any additional services you agree. Offer to build that website and maybe pitch to help with other digital marketing services such as social media management, graphic design, advertising (all of which you can learn on YouTube).

You will need some details about their business, here are a few things to obtain to get you started:

• A main photo of them or a business logo
• Describe your business in a few sentences
• Who are your biggest competitors?
• What is your company colour scheme?
• What makes you different from your competitors?
• Why should someone use your business?
• Who is your target audience?

These basic questions can help you build the site, which you will get better at each and every time you do it.

Like I say this isn’t a push-button get rich quick scheme, it will take effort and you will level up your skills, but the good thing is, you are working with sites that can’t get much worse.

Strategy 1 – Build A Free Website For Small Business

Your next step is to build a website or sales funnel. If you don’t know, a sales funnel is similar to a website but it has a very specific purpose i.e instead of menus and pages it tries to direct them into signing up, buying etc.

The good news is there is software available that takes the heavy lifting out of this for you, where you can use loads of premade templates to quickly build a website and you just need to change out the details.

In fact, if you want a free template that you can just import yourself to get started then click on these examples I have created for you:

There are tonnes of really good sales funnel/landing page builders out there. I use Clickfunnels and Groovefunnels.

The one I am going to recommend to you is Groovefunnels who have a free plan, with tonnes of different applications – more on that in a moment.

Strategy 2 – Affiliate Marketing

First of all, anyone who agrees to work with you, can now build a relationship with them, look to secure a monthly retainer to take care of some of their digital marketing needs – emails, website maintenance, advertising, social media etc.

All stuff you can learn on youtube or outsource

But this is another trick to making money, by using affiliate marketing, where you get a commission if someone buys through your link. In other words, we recommend products that we get paid for.

For example……Groovefunnels.

Who is creating an all in one digital suite where you get:

• Email
• Webpage builder
• Membership sites
• Sell digital products
• Eccomerce
• Webinars
• Basically everything you could need all in one place, which saves paying for multiple services.

But perhaps the best advantage of Groovefunnels is that it has a free account, which some of the more established funnel builders don’t…….and people love free.

So you could prove the concept, get them setup using your affiliate link, and then when they are happy you can upsell them on the full version.

At the time of writing, if someone signs up to a paid plan, then Groove pay 20% commission to anyone using the free account, and 40% if you’re on the full account.

So my advice would be to pay for the one-off platinum commission and learn everything and anything you can about it.

Dive deep, watch all of the youtube videos, and test it.

Create a template for each and every business type you can think of. Show it as a demo. Talk about the benefits for it.

Now show the customer how great it is and how initially they can sign up for free, as everything they need is in one place

If you then set them up, you would get that 40% if they buy it either as a one-off or each and every month.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that there are people doing this – they immerse themselves in software and see how it can help others. They then go out there and show these people how it can help them.

I know of a blogger who did this with Clickfunnels and ended up selling his blog for reportedly 6 figures. Don’t underestimate this model and don’t underestimate how possible it is for you to do this, if you put the time into learning it.

Now, here’s the bit you’ve been waiting for.

A way we can still make money from those that said no to your polite email.

Because let’s face it, a random out of the blue email will work for some, but others that are a little more cynical like yours truly here, will think hmmmm what’s going on. Is this legit?

Strategy 3 – Write A Guide Using Affiliate Links

Now I haven’t seen anyone else who creates content on how to make money with Google maps, teaching this, so this is just for you as a thank you for making it this far

Even though they said no, we are working on a value approach.

We have already told them their website is crap and they aren’t getting traffic on google, so that thought is in their head. Let’s now build trust, and help them out anyway…..

You can either create a google document and just add screenshots and instructions, or maybe create some video training, you can actually do this for free using Groovefunnels where you create your own member site.

Whatever works for you.

It doesn’t have to be fancy, you’re just going to show them two things:

1. How to claim Google My Business
2. How to create a website or sales funnel in Groovefunnels (You can even share a template for them so they just import it and change the name etc)

Again, that will automatically make you a commission if they one day buy the full package, so it’s in your interest to make that document good.

Who knows, they may also get in touch and say “I’ve looked at this and can you help me?”

Basically, some people will be scared your email is a scam but they know their website isn’t great, so will do it themselves, this gives us a way of making money through our affiliate links.

These are 3 genuine ways that show you EXACTLY how to make money with Google maps. In this case, we are making money from companies that want to work with us, and those that don’t.

Now, we are going to be using affiliate marketing in order to make that money, which is basically where you promote a product/service and if someone signs up via your link you get a commission.

I am going to tell you why software is the perfect opportunity to make money, how to achieve this, and one technique to make recurring commissions on autopilot

When it comes to affiliate marketing, software can be one of the best things to promote. Here are 3 reasons why I believe software is such a great opportunity

1. People tend to need software more than they desire it

For example, a blogger may need an email autoresponder software in order to build their subscriber list.

An online seller may need an eCommerce suite in order to run their store, fulfil orders, manage customers.

A photographer may need an online platform to sell their digital products or even software to edit and process their images.

An entrepreneur may need a funnel builder to create a landing page, host their digital products, and much more.

2. Business buyers are more willing spenders

Secondly, these people, are usually purchasing for business purposes so are more willing and able spenders. I know personally, I don’t pay for any software juts because its fun, yet for my online business, I pay for 3 or 4 different software because they help me with my business needs.

3. Recurring and high ticket commissions

Lastly, a lot of these products in the software category will pay recurring commissions, in other words for as long as the person you refer stays a customer, they will pay you an affiliate commission. Many businesses will start using a particular software and then when it’s ingrained into their processes they are unlikely to change it unless the quality really deteriorates or it no longer does what they need.

It’s simply too much hassle and they build habits around that software, which then becomes a long term earner.

First, I would always recommend signing up yourself. Figuring out all the good and bad parts, learning how to use it and really understand the reasons why a business should use it.

• Does it help them make money?
• Does it help them create quicker?
• Does it add quality to their products and services?
• Does it generate customers?
• Does it help increase profits?
• Does it help them stay organised?

Each piece of software will have its benefits and most of these you can probably work out just from their sales pages, which also giveaway their ideal customers. Use these SAAS sales pages to your adventure and find your angles, pain points, common language that you should incorporate.

Personally, in order to achieve a long term business, I would create two things – a blog and a youtube channel.

Combine the two in order to maximise your chances of ranking on google.

But if you just want to start with YouTube then that’s fine – because it’s likely to be the best place for people looking for help with software, as people want to visualise what they are getting.

Now you may wonder what content should you create?

Sure tutorials can work, how-to videos that demonstrate how to perform a certain task, but these often appeal more to current users and you are looking for those who don’t know they need this software yet. So my advice would be  to create broader content.

In other words, instead of creating a video that says “How to publish a form in Getresponse email autoresponder” create one that says “How to build an email list from your blog”.

It also allows us to target a much wider audience. If someone is searching for GetResponse tutorials then chances are that is a much smaller and specific audience.

• If you already have an AdSense account then you can connect it, or if not, now is where you would create a new one. (You need an AdSense account to get paid.)
• Choose your preferences for monetization – such as what type of ads to apply, and whether you want to automatically set them for your back catalog.

Once you have been accepted and monetization is enabled, you will be able to use the revenue section under analytics to determine how much money you earnt from YouTube.

Notice as well, Nerd Wallet is creating content based on people’s pain points. They give advice on how to make money, how to pay back University fees, and planning a vacation.

Best Reviews

Next up: Best Reviews. This site uses the exact same monetisation strategy – Affiliate Marketing. The difference ultimately lies with WHAT they’re comparing.

Best Reviews literally compares everything – from bathrobes, all the way to air purifiers.

Coming from humble beginnings, Best Reviews is now a big site – loved and used by many people. They have built themselves up and now have a lot more authority and credibility.

Importantly, their call to action buttons do not say “buy now,” they simply say “check price.” That’s one of the main factors that people consider, hence why they don’t reveal it.

They generate that referral with curiosity.

When you click “check price,” you are taken to Amazon. From there, anything that the user buys on Amazon will give Best Reviews a commission.

Martin Lewis is the figurehead of MoneySavingExpert. He doesn’t actually own the website anymore, but he set it up for less than $100.

Martin Lewis sold the website for £87 million, after growing and growing the site.

Their mission is incredibly ethical; to help people save money and help them make smart financial decisions. However, they still make money – they are a business, after all.

They make their money from affiliate links, which are scattered around the website. Links that return a commission when someone makes a purchase.

This is a little bit different from the others – it’s a personal blog.

An incredibly well built personal blog.

The owner, Michelle Schroeder, is sincere in her writing – revealing that she made over $1.5 million in 2018.

Again, affiliate marketing made her the most money – producing around 62% of her annual income.

Over $900,000.

Once you begin creating traffic and build up credibility, you can then start to sell courses and partner with others.

Creating a personal brand and being relatable is a great strategy.

People will learn to like, know and trust you. 

If you are genuine and create content that helps people then in return you can establish passive income from websites and blogs.

How Can You Build Passive Income Streams Using Websites?

There are a few things that you can learn from these four sites.

Firstly, don’t give up – each one of these sites started from humble beginnings, and required a lot of nurturing and hard work.

At one point they were nothing. They took those brave first steps.

You have to build up your website and allow it to grow. Only when you begin to bring in traffic, can you then start to earn money.

Secondly, affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to earn money – even if the rates are low. If you bring in enough users, you’ll eventually receive a decent amount of money.

However, it isn’t always about huge traffic generation and millions of followers.
